Originally developed in the late 1960’s as a homologation special to dominate European touring car championships, the BMW 3.0 CSL quickly earned its place in motorsport history. Known as the “Batmobile” in its most extreme Group 5 guise, the CSL combined lightweight engineering, cutting-edge aerodynamics and pure race pedigree — a true icon of its era.

The BMW 3.0 CSL (Coupe Sport Leichtbau) was born in 1972 as a lightweight evolution of the BMW E9 platform. It was BMW Motorsport GmbH’s first true creation — and it marked the beginning of BMW's long and successful factory racing program.
With its stripped-down interior, aluminum panels, and aggressive stance, the CSL was purpose-built for domination. It won the European Touring Car Championship six times between 1973 and 1979 and saw action across the globe — including at the Nürburgring, Spa, and even Le Mans.
The most dramatic variant, the Group 5 CSL, featured wild aerodynamic upgrades — earning it the nickname “Batmobile.” Driven by legends like Hans-Joachim Stuck, Chris Amon, and Niki Lauda, it became an instant icon.
Today, the 3.0 CSL remains one of the most collectible and revered BMWs ever made — a symbol of the brand’s racing DNA and engineering excellence.
