The Car

The Volvo 240 Turbo Group A is a significant chapter in the history of motorsports, showcasing how a manufacturer known for sturdy and reliable family cars made a notable mark in the world of racing. Introduced in the 1980s, the Volvo 240 Turbo was developed to compete in the Group A racing category, a class that featured production-based cars with limited modifications.

The heart of the Volvo 240 Turbo Group A was its robust 2.1-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. Despite its seemingly modest displacement, this engine was a powerhouse, thanks to extensive development and tuning by Volvo's racing division. It produced upwards of 300 horsepower in race trim, a significant figure for the era and the class. The turbocharged engine, coupled with a well-engineered chassis, made the car a formidable competitor on the track.

The Volvo 240 Turbo Group A enjoyed considerable success in various international racing events. One of its most notable achievements was winning the European Touring Car Championship in 1985. This victory was a testament to the car's reliability, speed, and the skill of its drivers. The 240 Turbo also competed admirably in the Australian Touring Car Championship and made appearances in the United States in the IMSA GT Championship.
